South Carolina’s 5th Congressional Special Primaries Set

With the close of filing yesterday, we have our field now set for the Republican and Democratic hopefuls aiming to replace Mick Mulvaney in South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District.

When Miles Coleman wrote up our preview of the special, no Democrat had even declared, but now three will face off in a primary: Alexis Frank, Les Murphy, and Archie Parnell. On the Republican side, seven candidates made their run official: Chad Connelly, Ray Craig, Sheri Few, Tom Mullikin, Ralph Norman, Tommy Pope, and Kris Wampler.

The primaries are set for May 2nd, with a runoff, if necessary, on May 16th. The general election will be held on June 20th.

While Democrats are bullish on the GA06 special, and optimistic on the at-large race in Montana, very little attention has been paid to SC05, and for good reason: this district voted for Donald Trump by a 57.3% TO 38.8% margin.
