Gavin Newsom, whose donors range from Silicon Valley to Hollywood, has gotten out to a significant lead. Asian American business leaders have contributed large sums to John Chiang, while Antonio Villaraigosa has reached out to wealthy Angelenos...The other candidates are scrambling to catch Newsom, who was fundraising more than a year before he had any competition. Peter Thiel, whom some Republicans had hoped would jump into a contest that has been dominated by Democrats so far, re-appears in the race – as the second biggest contributor to Democratic Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. Thiel, a venture capitalist who supported candidate Donald Trump and spoke at the Republican National Convention, has donated $56,400 to the former San Fransisco Mayor and current front-runner for Governor. Another “Republican-donating-to-Democrats”, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, donated $14,100 to both State Treasurer John Chiang and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
