DDHQ Morning News Spotlight: PM Johnson Faces Vote of No-Confidence, Plus Fetterman Admits Previously Undisclosed Heart Condition

Morning Headlines

  • United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a vote of no-confidence from within his party today, just 3 years after leading Conservatives to a landslide electoral victory. Anger against Johnson primarily stems from the Downing Street parties hosted during the height of COVID, breaking his own restrictions. Johnson recently became the first Prime Minister officially found to break the law, fined $62 for breaking his own law. Confidence in the economy is also at a low right now, with inflation in the UK recently hitting a 40-year high. 180 of 359 Tory members of Parliament must vote to oust Johnson in order for him to lose power. Tories have no alternative option to Johnson, meaning that if he is ousted there will be a complicated and bloody fight for power within the party.
  • Democratic Nominee for Pennsylvania Senate and Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman opened up about his recent heart issues in light of his recent stroke days before the Democratic Primary. Fetterman’s stroke was caused by atrial fibrillation and Fetterman also suffers from a disease called Cardiomyopathy, which makes it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body and can even lead to heart failure. Fetterman admitted he avoided going to the doctor since his diagnosis of atrial fibrillation five years ago and did not continue taking medications to treat his heart issues. Dr. Ramesh Chandra, Fetterman’s doctor, said that he believes Fetterman should be able to “campaign and serve in the US Senate without any problem” as long as he “takes his health and recovery very seriously this time.”
  • Businessman David McCormick conceded to Dr. Mehmut Oz in the GOP Senate Primary on Saturday, setting up a general election between Oz and Fetterman this November. The concession was unexpected from McCormick, given the statewide recount will conclude on Tuesday. McCormick is only trailing Oz by 950 votes, a .07% margin. This is a much-needed win for Donald Trump after a tough night in Georgia on May 24th. Trump still holds an undefeated record in US Senate Primaries, which will be tested again in Nevada on June 14th. McCormick offered his full endorsement to Oz.
